Stopping distance

40m

40

At 50 km/h you come to a stop after 40 m: 15 m reaction distance plus 25 m braking distance (Normal braking).

Stopping distance to scale

How this was calculated
Reaction distance (1 s) = (v ÷ 10) × 3 = (50 ÷ 10) × 3 = 15 m
Braking distance = (v ÷ 10)² = (5)² = 25 m
Stopping distance = 15 m + 25 m = 40 m

Driving-school rules of thumb (ADAC) with a reaction time of 1 second on a dry road. Wet roads, tyres, load and fatigue lengthen the distance considerably.
