The German 15-point system
In the German upper secondary stage, performance is not graded from 1 to 6 but in points from 0 to 15. 15 points is the top result, 0 points means "insufficient". Vocational upper secondary schools (FOS and BOS) use the same scale.
Converting points into a grade follows the nationally uniform formula G = (17 − P) / 3. So 14 points give exactly grade 1.0, 11 points give 2.0 and 5 points give 4.0. There is one special case: at 0 points the formula would return 5.67, but the official conversion table states 6.0 – and the table value applies.
