Weighted grade average: school, university and vocational training

How weighting affects the result

The grade average is decisive in many school and professional contexts: whether for admission to the Abitur (German high school diploma), the numerus clausus (NC) at university, or the final grade in vocational training – an accurate calculation is essential. The simple arithmetic average, where every grade counts equally, is often not sufficient. Many examination regulations require a weighting, where certain subjects or exams contribute more strongly to the overall grade.

The formula is: average = Σ(grade × weight) / Σ weight. If mathematics is weighted with a factor of 2 and you score a 2, this corresponds to a contribution of 4 – twice as strong as a minor subject with weight 1. This method ensures that core competencies are given appropriate consideration. In the German school system, German, mathematics and the first foreign language are often weighted twice.

For prospective students, the precise Abitur average is important, as many degree programs require an NC. Every tenth of a point can be decisive here. With our calculator, you can already simulate during the school year which final average would result from different grade combinations – and improve targetedly in weaker subjects.

In vocational training, vocational school, in-company training, and written as well as practical exams often flow into the final grade with different weightings. Our calculator is designed for any number of entries – simply enter all relevant grades and the corresponding weighting. Subjects for which no grade is available yet can be left blank – they are ignored.

Frequently asked questions about the grade average calculator

Weighting, school types and calculation explained

The weighted grade average is calculated as the sum of all (grade × weight) values divided by the sum of all weights. If mathematics is weighted double and the grade is 2, this subject contributes 2 × 2 = 4 points. In an unweighted calculation, every subject has a weight of 1. Our calculator handles these steps automatically – just enter grades and weightings.

Weighting varies by German state (Bundesland), school type and report card. As a rule: core and main subjects (German, mathematics, English) are usually weighted double (weight 2), while minor subjects are weighted single (weight 1). For the Abitur, advanced courses (Leistungskurse) often count triple. Check the exact weighting in the examination regulations of your school or state.

For the final report card (intermediate school leaving certificate, Abitur, vocational school), all subject grades are weighted and summed according to the applicable examination regulations, then divided by the total weight. The result is rounded to one or two decimal places. Our calculator uses mathematical rounding: 2.345 becomes 2.35.

With the arithmetic average, all grades are treated equally – each counts the same. With the weighted average, more important subjects or exams count more strongly. If you have a 2 in mathematics (weighted double) and a 4 in art (weighted single), the weighted average is (2×2 + 4×1) / 3 = 8/3 ≈ 2.67 – not the simple average of (2+4)/2 = 3.0.

You can enter any number of subjects and grades. Simply click "Add subject" to add further rows. Subjects without an entered grade are automatically ignored and do not flow into the calculation. This means you can already calculate partial report cards without having to fill in every subject.
