Date calculator: two modes for every need

Calculate difference or shift a date

The date calculator offers two calculation modes that cover the most common tasks around dates and time. In the first mode "calculate difference", you enter a start and an end date and instantly get the difference in days, weeks, months and years. In addition, the exact calendar breakdown is shown – for example "1 year, 3 months, 12 days". This is especially useful for deadlines, contract matters, anniversaries or a countdown to an event.

In the second mode "shift date", you add or subtract any number of days to a start date. Typical use cases are payment terms (e.g. invoice + 30 days), notice periods, probation periods or delivery dates. Negative values calculate backward. Leap years and different month lengths are automatically taken into account correctly.

Technically, the calculator uses UTC-based date arithmetic. This matters because local time calculations can be shifted by one hour due to daylight saving time (DST) – which leads to errors in day-precise calculations. With UTC differences, the result is always precise, regardless of time zone and daylight saving changes.

Common use cases: How many days until my vacation? How long is my notice period (e.g. 3 months to the end of the month)? When does my contract expire? How many weeks have passed since my last doctor’s appointment? When is my 100th birthday or 10,000th day of life? For age calculations, we recommend the specialized age calculator, which breaks down years, months and days exactly.

Frequently asked questions about the date calculator

Date difference, leap years and calculation logic explained

Our date calculator does this automatically: enter the from and to dates, and days, weeks, months and years appear instantly. The calculation is UTC-based, so no daylight saving time (DST) change leads to an incorrect result. Manually: count the days or calculate the difference of the day numbers within the year (with leap year correction).

The date calculator in difference mode calculates the difference between the start and end date excluding the start date. Example: January 1 to January 31 results in 30 days (not 31). If you want to count both days, add 1 to the result. In the working days calculator, both days are counted inclusively.

Choose the "shift date" mode, enter the start date and enter the number of days – a positive number for forward, a negative number for backward. The calculator automatically accounts for leap years and month ends. Example: January 1 + 30 days = January 31.

A leap year has 366 days, a normal year has 365 days – so one more day. Leap years are divisible by 4, except by 100 – unless they are divisible by 400. 2024 is a leap year (366 days), 2026 is not (365 days). Our calculator automatically accounts for leap years.

Weeks: days ÷ 7 (our calculator shows the rounded result). Months: calendar-based, so not always exactly 30 days – the calculator counts full months by calendar (e.g. January 1 to March 1 = 2 months). For rough estimates: 1 month ≈ 30.44 days, 1 year = 365.25 days (with leap year average).
