Estimating fence costs and post count correctly
Cost ranges by fence type and the post-spacing rule of thumb
The cost per running meter varies considerably by fence type. Chain-link is the cheapest option at roughly €8–15/m material, followed by the by far most common garden fence type in Germany, the metal panel fence (€25–75/m material). Wood fences range from €10–90/m depending on the design, while composite (WPC) fences are the most expensive at €50–350/m and the most strongly affected by height and quality.
Material vs. full price: If you build the fence yourself, you only pay the material price. With installation by a professional contractor, another €20–60/m is added for labor — for WPC and wood, the total is often €60–255/m including installation.
For the number of posts, the rule of thumb is: posts = rounded up(fence length ÷ post spacing) + 1. The usual post spacing is 2.00–2.50 m. For metal panel fences, it is usually fixed by the standard panel width of 2.50 m.
