Estimating garden costs correctly
Between simple lawn seeding and an elaborate garden design, costs can differ by several hundred euros per m²
The cost of a new garden depends heavily on the scope of work involved. A simple new build with lawn seeding, basic paths made of concrete slabs and hardy perennials without a pond or pool costs around €30–50/m². A standard design carried out by a landscaping contractor with paths, lawn or turf, and flower beds costs €70–150/m². With high-quality materials, natural stone walls, water features or an irrigation system, €150–300/m² and more is realistic.
Ongoing maintenance: A typical annual contract for a medium-sized garden with regular lawn mowing, hedge trimming, weed control and leaf removal costs around €4–6/m² per year. With lower maintenance needs (only occasional mowing), this drops to €2–4/m², while full-service maintenance with additional special services rises to €6–9/m².
Important: All figures given are guide values from multiple market sources. Regional differences, soil conditions, choice of materials and the contractor engaged significantly affect the actual price. Always obtain several quotes before commissioning work.
