Assessing renovation costs realistically
Why a range is more honest than a fixed price
This calculator is an aggregated total cost estimator: it combines market-typical cost ranges across several trades (bathroom, kitchen, painting, flooring, electrics, windows) into a rough overall estimate for your renovation project. Unlike our individual material calculators, it does not calculate exact quantities (e.g. tiles in m² or wallpaper rolls), but provides an initial budget orientation.
Renovation costs depend heavily on region, building condition and the chosen fitting quality – price differences between standard and luxury fittings can be more than double. That is why this calculator deliberately always shows a range (minimum to maximum) rather than a single fixed price.
What actually influences the costs
- Region: Tradesperson hourly rates and material costs differ significantly between metropolitan areas and rural regions.
- Building condition: Older buildings often require additional work (e.g. deteriorated wiring, uneven walls), which increases costs.
- Fitting quality: Standard, upscale or luxury fittings often differ in price by a factor of 2–3.
- DIY work: Anyone who wallpapers, paints or lays flooring themselves saves mainly on labor costs – but materials remain part of the calculation.
