Sources & calculation basis

Our calculations are based on the following official sources (as of: July 2026):

Mothers' Pension III 2027: More Pension for Child-Raising Periods Before 1992

From 1 January 2027, the Mothers' Pension III (Mütterrente III) raises the child-raising period credited toward the pension for children born before 1992 from 2.5 to 3.0 pension points per child. This closes the last remaining gap between the credit for children born before and after 1992 — children born from 1992 onward have already received the full three years of child-raising credit for a long time.

The reform is part of the German government's 2025 pension package and takes effect automatically: neither existing pensioners nor future retirees need to submit an application — the German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) applies the increase on its own. Our calculator shows you, based on the number of your children born before 1992, how much your monthly and annual pension is expected to increase.

These Factors Determine Your Personal Increase

  1. Number of children born before 1992: Only these children benefit from the increased credit — the more children born before 1992, the larger the effect.
  2. Current pension value: The additional pension points are multiplied by the pension value valid at the time (from 1 July 2026: €42.52).
  3. Children born from 1992: Nothing changes for them — they already receive the full 3.0 pension points for the child-raising credit today.
  4. Health/long-term care insurance and tax: The amount shown is gross — depending on your personal situation, deductions may reduce the actual increase.

Background: Why a Mothers' Pension III?

Since the introduction of the Mothers' Pension (Mütterrente) in 2014 and its extension in 2019 (Mothers' Pension II), there was a difference in how child-raising periods were credited toward the pension: children born from 1992 onward were always credited with three full years of child-raising time, while children born before that only received 2.5 years. This unequal treatment was repeatedly criticized in the political debate because it disadvantaged mothers (and, less often, fathers) of older children, who raised their children under different social conditions.

With the Mothers' Pension III as part of the 2025 pension package, this last gap is closed: from 1 January 2027, the same value of three full child-raising years (3.0 pension points) applies to all children — regardless of their year of birth. According to the German government, this mainly benefits millions of mothers (and, to a lesser extent, fathers) whose children were born before 1992. Implementation is automatic through the German Pension Insurance, without those affected having to take any action themselves.

Important for context: the legal basis is intended to take effect on 1 January 2027, but the actual technical and organizational payout of the higher amount is, according to current knowledge, expected only in the course of 2028 — applied retroactively from 1 January 2027. Our calculator therefore explicitly labels the resulting back payment as "expected", since the exact timing depends on the further legislative process and its implementation by the German Pension Insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mothers' Pension III

Who benefits, applications, payout timing and taxes at a glance

All mothers and fathers who raised children born before 1992 benefit — regardless of whether they already receive a pension or will only retire in the future. For every child born before 1992, the recognized child-raising credit rises from 2.5 to 3.0 pension points. Children born from 1992 onward are not affected, since they already receive the full 3 years (3.0 points) today.

No. The increase is applied automatically by the German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) — both for existing pensions already being paid and for future pensions. No separate application is required.

The legal basis is intended to take effect on 1 January 2027. According to the current status, the actual payout of the higher amount is expected only from 2028 onward — but then retroactively for the period from 1 January 2027. The exact implementation date depends on the further legislative and administrative process.

Possibly, yes. The Mothers' Pension is part of the statutory pension and is therefore treated the same way: pensioners pay the usual health and long-term care insurance contributions on their gross pension, and depending on total income, income tax may also apply. The amount shown by this calculator is a gross value before these deductions.

Yes. Despite the name "Mothers' Pension" (Mütterrente), the rule is gender-neutral: it applies to whichever parent the child-raising period was assigned to under pension law — this can also be the father, for example if he was primarily responsible for childcare.
