Sources & calculation basis

Our calculations are based on the following official sources (as of: July 2026):

EV subsidy 2026: up to €6,000 purchase grant

Since 19 May 2026, private individuals in Germany have been able to apply for the new, socially graduated EV subsidy from the federal government. It supports the purchase or leasing of an electric vehicle first registered in Germany from 1 January 2026 onwards — ranging from €1,500 to €6,000 depending on drivetrain type, household income and number of children. Unlike the earlier environmental bonus, the subsidy amount is explicitly based on the social situation of the household rather than the vehicle price.

Our calculator shows you within seconds whether you meet the income threshold and how much your personal subsidy amounts to — including a detailed breakdown of base subsidy, social scaling and child supplement according to the official BAFA subsidy directive of 19 May 2026.

The subsidy at a glance

€1,500 to €6,000
Depending on drivetrain type, income and number of children — the exact scale is set by the BAFA directive.
Income threshold up to €90,000
Max. €80,000 taxable income, +€5,000 per child under 18 (max. 2 children).
Purchase or leasing
Both forms of acquisition are equally eligible.
Retroactive from 1 Jan 2026
Vehicles already registered can still submit the application (12-month deadline).

How your subsidy is made up

Example: battery-electric car, €55,000 taxable income, 1 child

Example: battery-electric car, €55,000 taxable income, 1 child
ItemAmount
Base subsidy (battery-electric)€3,000.00
Social scaling (income under €60,000)+ €1,000.00
Child supplement (1 child × €500)+ €500.00
Total subsidy amount€4,500.00

These three factors determine your subsidy amount

  1. Drivetrain type: Battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell cars start at a €3,000 base subsidy, plug-in hybrids and range-extender vehicles at €1,500.
  2. Taxable household income: Below €60,000 taxable income there is +€1,000, below €45,000 taxable income another +€1,000 on top (max. +€2,000 in total).
  3. Number of children: For each child under 18 (max. 2 children) the subsidy increases by €500 — the income threshold also rises by €5,000 per child.

Who is eligible to apply – and who is not?

Eligible to apply are private individuals with their main residence in Germany to whom the eligible new vehicle is registered and whose taxable household annual income does not exceed the threshold that applies to them. This explicitly also applies to self-employed people (provided the vehicle is held privately) and pensioners. Companies, associations and municipalities are excluded from the subsidy, as are people without a German main residence.

A maximum of two applications can be submitted per household — each eligible household member can receive a subsidy for their own vehicle registered to them. The vehicle must remain continuously registered to the applicant in Germany for at least 36 months; in the event of early sale, theft or total loss, BAFA decides on a case-by-case basis on a pro-rata reclaim.

Frequently asked questions about the EV subsidy

Retroactivity, applying, taxable income and the funding pool in detail

Yes. All new vehicles first registered in Germany from 1 January 2026 onwards are eligible — even though the digital application portal only went live on 19 May 2026. If you registered your vehicle between 1 January and 19 May 2026, you can submit the application retroactively. In all cases, the application deadline is 12 months from the registration date.

The application is submitted exclusively online via the Förderzentrale Deutschland (FZD), not directly with BAFA. You need a BundID account with an online ID or an ELSTER certificate for authentication. The application can only be submitted after the vehicle registration, at the latest 12 months afterwards. You must upload the two most recent income tax assessments of everyone contributing to the household income, plus proof of child benefit if applicable — with any unnecessary details redacted.

The zvE is the sum of the taxable incomes of all partners living in the same household (marriage, registered civil partnership or marriage-like partnership) according to the income tax assessment — not your gross or net salary. For the subsidy, the average of the two most recent tax assessments is used, which smooths out one-off payments such as severance pay. Income earned by children who live in the household but work themselves does not count. Our income tax calculator provides an overview of how this is calculated.

Yes, purchase and leasing are equally eligible. The vehicle keeper and the lessee do not have to be the same person — in principle, the person to whom the vehicle is registered in Germany (the keeper according to the registration certificate) is entitled to apply.

According to BAFA, the programme has a total budget of around €3 billion for an estimated 800,000 vehicles over the period 2026 to 2029, with around €500 million earmarked for 2026. BAFA does not name a fixed end date for the budget, but funds are allocated in the order applications are received from the budget available each year — if demand is high, an individual year's allocation could be exhausted early. BAFA publishes current updates on its programme page.

The base subsidy is €3,000 for purely battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles, but only €1,500 for plug-in hybrids and range-extender vehicles — these must additionally emit no more than 60 g CO₂/km or offer at least 80 km of purely electric range and be registered by 30 June 2027. The social scaling by income and the child supplement apply equally to both drivetrain types on top.
