Gross and net working hours at a glance

The hours calculator determines your net working hours from three inputs: start time, end time and break duration in minutes. The formula is simple: Net working hours = (End − Start) − Break. The result is shown both in HH:MM format and as a decimal figure (e.g. 8.0 h) – ideal for time tracking and payroll.

Night shifts are detected automatically: if the end time falls before the start time, the calculator correctly computes the working hours across midnight.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Hours Calculator

Net hours, night shifts and decimal format explained

Net working hours = (End time − Start time) − Break duration. Example: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm is 8.5 gross hours. Minus a 30-minute break gives 8.0 net hours (480 minutes). Our calculator does this automatically.

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g. start 22:00, end 06:00), the calculator automatically detects the night shift and adds 24 hours to the difference. The result is then the correct gross working time across midnight.

Gross working hours are the total time spent at work (from start to end). Net working hours are the actual hours worked after deducting break times. Payroll usually counts net working hours, provided breaks are unpaid.

Decimal hours = net working minutes ÷ 60. Example: 480 minutes ÷ 60 = 8.0 hours. 450 minutes ÷ 60 = 7.5 hours. This format is used for time tracking systems and payroll.
