Child supplement 2026: everything you need to know

The child supplement (Kinderzuschlag, KiZ) is a state benefit for families with a low income who are not entitled to citizen’s benefit. It is paid in addition to child benefit and can be combined with housing benefit.

Requirements for the child supplement

Income limits

  1. Minimum income limit for couples: At least €900 gross per month as a couple
  2. Minimum income limit for single parents: At least €600 gross per month for single parents
  3. No fixed upper limit: There is no fixed maximum income limit: if the income exceeds the parents’ needs, the child supplement is gradually reduced (45% for earned income, 100% for other income) until it phases out

Asset limits (§ 6a (3) BKGG)

  1. Allowance for the first person: €40,000 asset allowance for the applicant
  2. Allowance per additional member: An additional €15,000 for each additional member of the benefit unit

Child benefit
The child supplement is paid in addition to child benefit. In 2026 child benefit is a uniform €259 per child.
Housing benefit
Families receiving child supplement can also apply for housing benefit. This combination is intended to prevent families from having to rely on citizen’s benefit.
School supplies
Benefits from the education and participation package: €174 per school year for school supplies (€154 at the start of the school year, €20 in February).
Lunch
Free participation in communal lunch at nursery and school.
Trips & school excursions
Coverage of the costs for one-day trips and multi-day school excursions.
Tutoring
Learning support where needed, if the learning goal is at risk.
Club fees

Couples must earn at least €900 gross, single parents at least €600. The income must not be so high that there would be no more entitlement to citizen’s benefit. In addition, asset limits apply: €15,000 per adult and €3,850 per child.

Yes, the child supplement is paid in addition to child benefit (€259 per child). You can also apply for housing benefit at the same time. You are also automatically entitled to benefits from the education and participation package (school supplies, lunch, club fees).

You apply for the child supplement at the Familienkasse of the Federal Employment Agency. The application can be submitted online via the Familienkasse portal. Approval is granted for 6 months, after which a new application must be submitted.

The maximum amount of €297 per child applies regardless of age. Age does matter elsewhere, however: for single parents, the supplement included in the parents’ needs depends on the number and age of the minor children (§ 21 (3) SGB II), and from a child’s 25th birthday it is excluded from the child supplement.
