Frequently asked questions

The most important answers about salary calculators and wage tax

With a gross salary of 3,000 euros, tax class 1 without church tax leaves you with €2,054 net per month (no children, age 30, statutory health insurance with the average additional contribution). The exact amount depends on factors such as federal state, health insurance and child allowances. Just try our salary calculator – you'll have your personal result in seconds.

An annual salary of 50,000 euros gross leaves about €32,337 net per year in tax class 1 (€2,695 per month) and about €36,315 in tax class 3 (€3,026 per month) – each without church tax, no children, age 30, statutory health insurance. With our wage calculator you can work out your net pay from your own details.

The best tax class depends on your life situation. As a single person or after a divorce, you automatically get tax class 1. Married couples can choose between 3/5 or 4/4 – the 3/5 combination pays off if one partner earns significantly more. With the 4/4 combination with factor, wage tax is split according to the ratio of both incomes.

Probably not: since 2021, most wage-tax payers no longer pay the solidarity surcharge. In 2026 the exemption threshold is 20,350 euros of wage tax per year (40,700 euros for joint assessment). Only higher earners still pay it – within a phase-in zone up to the full rate of 5.5%.

Quite simple: your gross salary is what's stated in your employment contract – your agreed salary before deductions. Your net salary is the amount that actually lands in your account. In between are wage tax, solidarity surcharge, church tax if applicable, and social insurance contributions (health, pension, unemployment and long-term care insurance). Our salary calculator shows you exactly how your net is made up from your gross.

The 2026 social insurance contributions break down as follows: health insurance 14.6% (+ additional contribution of approx. 2.9%), pension insurance 18.6%, unemployment insurance 2.6%, long-term care insurance 3.6% (4.2% for childless people from age 23). Employees and employers generally pay half each; the surcharge for childless people in long-term care insurance is paid by the employee alone.

No, absolutely not. The entire calculation takes place exclusively in your browser (client-side). No salary data is transmitted to our servers. Your inputs stay with you – 100% GDPR-compliant.
